What’s up with Bowflex Dumbbells?

Space Saving, Useful and Worth it for Most People

Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells are adjustable dumbbells which you can buy in 5-52 and 10-90 pound sets. Each dumbbell comes in on a block which holds the mini-plates in place. When you put the dumbbell on the block, you can turn a dial on both sides of the dumbbell to select your weight (i.e. 2 dials per dumbbell to adjust weight for both hands).

Unlike the original adjustable dumbbells the Powerblocks, which were encased in these prison cell like cage, the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells (thankfully) look and feel like regular dumbbells. They are easy to use a serve a great purpose for most people who want to work out in their own home gym.

It should be known that while these dumbbells can function without the optional (and $150) stand as they have the blocks which hold the mini-plates in place while adjusting them, they are less convenient to use without the stand which holds the dumbbells at a height which is easy to adjust.

If treated properly meaning they’re always re-racked slowly, not thrown, not banged together hard and kept away from water, flames, acid and other disastrous materials, Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells are a very solid investment for a home gym and worth every penny you pay for them.

Quick Answer: NO

If it’s like finding a needle in a haystack finding a set of matching weight dumbbells in your gym, you can only imagine something like a set of adjustable dumbbells which must be re-racked correctly each time to keep functional. You may have even seen the Select Tech Bowflex dumbbells in shambles at your local sporting good store. They were designed for home use and if used properly, like you will no doubt do with your investment they are perfect for home use, but there’s a good reason why no commercial gym has probably ever carried the Bowflex Select Tech dumbbells.

SelectTech adjustable Bowflex dumbbells can either be a great investment for a personal trainer or a poor one. If there is little space where you train clients and/or you are a mobile personal trainer the SelectTech dumbbells are a savvy investment for any personal training business.

If you have space to train clients and/or train in a gym where more people than yourself and training client use the dumbbells, you are better off spending more money to get even a used dumbbell set.

Fortunately, like any set dumbbells, the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells and a personal trainer are a match made in heaven provided there are no external factors. Again, remember to think of the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells as a set of dumbbells all in one!
