If you’ve thought about receiving a nose job but don’t exactly know what it is, we’ve got you covered. A nose job is essentially designed to change the size and shape of your nose, and it is considered a highly safe and efficient way to augment your nose’s shape.
People receive nose jobs for various reasons, typically to enhance the shape or functionality of their nose. Your cosmetic surgeon will be happy to talk you through various aspects of rhinoplasty, as well as show you nose job before and after photos to see how they can augment your nose’s shape in a way you desire.
Let’s take a closer look at nose jobs to help you decide if receiving one is the right treatment for you!
What is rhinoplasty designed to do?
Each nose job procedure is different, with patients who choose one for cosmetic reasons going for aesthetic changes like hump removal or nostril reduction. Most nose job recipients are looking for a thinner tip, straighter bridge or generally smaller nose. Cosmetic surgeons will incorporate a range of techniques to alter the nasal structure. Patients receive them with the hope of improving the overall aesthetic and functionality of the nose.
What does a rhinoplasty consultation involve?
At your rhinoplasty consultation, your prospective surgeon will discuss your goals with you. The surgeon will examine both the outside and inside of your nose to evaluate whether you are a good candidate for a nose job.
Is there an age minimum in Australia?
As people under 18 are minors, Medical Board of Australia guidelines stipulate that a doctor refer them to psychological evaluation before receiving a nose job. There will then be a three-month cooling off period before they can receive the procedure. Nose jobs aren’t always the best treatment for people who are feeling depressed or insecure about their looks, and it may be for the best to receive counselling or other psychiatric treatment before going through with rhinoplasty.
What are the different types of rhinoplasty surgery?
There are two main types of rhinoplasty treatment: open technique and closed technique. When open technique rhinoplasty is undertaken, an incision is made between the nostrils. When closed rhinoplasty is performed, the incision is made inside of the nostrils.
Both techniques have benefits and drawbacks, with open rhinoplasty providing greater freedom to augment the nasal shape but potentially leaving a small incision scar as well as more swelling. Closed technique treatments, conversely, are usually a faster treatment. They also usually require less operative healing, however, closed rhinoplasties may sometimes not be effective for their desired results.
How long is a rhinoplasty procedure?
The length of a nose job treatment varies and is largely dependent on the individual’s needs and objectives. Typical rhinoplasty treatments last about two hours.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
Rhinoplasty isn’t typically associated with severe discomfort, however patients may experience mild nausea or headaches following their surgery. These recovery symptoms can typically be managed with bed rest and pain medications.
What does rhinoplasty recovery entail?
You may experience bruising and swelling for around a week after your treatment. You will probably have to wear a splint on your nose for a week after the rhinoplasty surgery. Your surgeon may also advise that you avoid any strenuous exercise and activity. Soon, your splint will be removed and you can resume your normal activities/schedule.
Swelling typically hangs around for a month or so after your rhinoplasty treatment, but for some patients it can last up to a year.
