Nighttime Running Safety Tips


For those of us with busy lives, the only time we can fit in a run is after dark. However, nighttime running presents several unique challenges and risks.

1. Always wear reflective clothing.

One of the most important things you can do to stay safe while running at night is to wear reflective clothing. With  26% of pedestrian fatalities occurring at night, it is imperative to make yourself visible to drivers.

Reflective vests, jackets, armbands, or even reflective tape that adheres to your clothing or shoes are all good options.

When choosing reflective clothing, make sure that the reflective material is visible from every angle.

2. Use a headlamp or a flashlight.

Running with a headlamp or flashlight will help you see where you’re going and ensure that others can see you too.

Choose a headlamp or flashlight that is bright, reliable, and capable of illuminating your path and helping you to see potential hazards like uneven surfaces or obstacles on your route.

3. Only run in well-lit areas.
